I think my answer is nobody notices or cares. More or less nobody cares how things are done in India. (Male, mathematics and science) A colleague from India reported that questions of how things are done elsewhere are asked in the context of curriculum reform, when it is explored how better performing countries actually operate; however, this comment related to his work experience at an elite university in the United States, not his academic experience in India, let alone his cultural lived experience in India.
Perhaps surprisingly, only four of the participants came from Asia: one from China, one from Pakistan and two from India. However, all four had received their PhD from a Western country. What is particularly noteworthy about this group of academics is that all but one of the colleagues from so-called ‘developing’ countries had completed either their PhD or a post-doctoral period in a ‘developed’ country (typically Germany, the United States or Australia), and the one who had not did later gain considerable work experience in the United States prior to being appointed to a Scottish university.
So we have a cohort of people roughly around my academic age, who all are similar. That has kind of helped. It helps that there is a cohort. If I was alone I might have felt very differently.
